Hair Rebonding 2012

I love my hair as any woman should.

I used to have really thin straight hair as a little girl and as puberty set in, it grew thicker and instead of straight, it began to curl to waves by the time I was in my 20s.

I did my first hair rebonding in 2010, courtesy of my cousin Tyng who 'treated' me to my first hair straightening session in Nov 2010. I broke the rules for the first five days and ended up with less than satisfactory result.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE DAYS (minimum THREE FULL DAYS) AFTER YOUR HAIR REBONDING SESSION:

Can I tie up my hair after rebonding?

1. DO NOT TIE UP YOUR HAIR (EVEN FOR SHOWER CAPS, I didn't tie up my hair and just let it roll up a bit but loose, into the shower cap).

Can I wash my hair after rebonding? How many days should I wait before washing or wetting my hair to let the chemicals set?
2. DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR, no matter how oily your scalp is, DO NOT WASH IT or else the effect won't be as nice, put the confinement ladies hair powder (or any other powder) as hair powder will make the hair less oily (popular among Chinese ladies who needed to observe the no-hair-wash for one-month rule after childbirth, seriously).

3. I think these are the top two rules, cannot recall anything else, but oh, AFTER the first five days maintenance are crucial as well, but oh well, that goes to any normal hair care, like steaming/treatment/scalp treatment, etc. Hair care after rebonding realy matters for smooth silky locks.

Anyway, I digress.

For 2011, I decided to have my hair rebonded for the second time. I took advantage of a RM88 opening promotion and here is the result:

Reminds you of a female ghost with long hair or the Malay will say pontianak/kuntilanak, right? lol. I blogged about it as well in June 2011 (check out my June 2011 archives) and am very satisfied with the result, and this time around, I tried very hard not to break the two rules above.

ONE BIG RULE: You are supposed to wait AT LEAST (minimum) SIX MONTHS between rebonding before you do your next rebonding, if you don't want healthy hair, go ahead and do it at a shorter interval. For naturally curly/wavy hair, there is one exception to the rule, which is to NOT do rebonding on the entire length but only on the roots, so the damage isn't as bad. Talk to your hair dresser for what suits you best. The main concern is your hair will be so damaged, it will break/fall out.

So the NUMBER ONE RULE OF POST-REBONDING MAINTENANCE IS: REGULAR TREATMENT. Regardless of what hair treatment, having some/a few is better than nothing at all, be it home treatment/daily hair serum, regular serum after hair wash, or salon treatment (varies in types and prices), do it for the sake of good strands of hair!

Now, I followed the ONE BIG RULE and waited longer than six months for my third rebonding. I did it in Feb 2012, and I plan to make it the only rebonding session for this year for the health of my hair.

This is the result (I trimmed my hair length and dyed it black 3 months before this in Nov 2011) after the rebonding:

This time around (current rate) it costs me RM158 for rebonding plus on the spot treatment. Still cheaper than most places in Klang Valley (Selangor and Kuala Lumpur).

Compare the before (in red, hair dyed light brown),

and after (in fuchsia, hair dark brown) pix:

Call it illusion or whatever, due to the hair colour which is darker, but my hair looks thicker and shinier and definitely healthier, right?

Secret? Tonnes of hair product? Not necessarily. lol Monthly salon treatment(about RM80 per month), plus daily serum and more concentrated serum on ends after each hair wash), plus scalp treatment *inclusive in salon treatment* and also hair tonic to promote hair growth (don't really stick to a regime, so I guess the salon treatment helps a lot).

MY ADVICE after years of trial and error is:

Stick to a hairdresser, go for regular hair treatments, try to stick to a regular home regime (I do miss it a few days in a week), and voila, soft silky hair. Rebonding without regular treatment will only damage your hair further and the effect isn't nice, trust me, coarse hair which is dry and always in disarray after awhile, so the rebonding effects will come to naught, so please treat your hair nice and 'invest' in some treatment!

No prizes for guessing my fav salon/spa at the moment. :) I am a regular, so just mention Sue's name for some special rates. Just say "Saya kawan Sue" even though I don't know you personally. Haha.

Then I suggest you can wash it earlier if you don't want it to be so straight.

It would be 3rd day for you now so go ahead and wash it!

If you don't wish for it to be extra straight in subsequent washes, don't blow dry it straight. Try restyling your hair by tucking it behind your ears when it is still wet, it will leave some 'curves' on an otherwise flat hair.

Try not to use curlers or other electrical styling products as your hair is still brittle (weak) from the rebonding!!

Hi Sue,
I felt some Hair breakage near scalp after rebonding. It is not much but i felt it at 2 places.
Is it normal to have some amount of hair breakage near scalp, it is kind of poking because it is broken just near the scalp. Is it something to worry about. What can i do ? It is not noticeable as I had really thick hair and it is less hair that got broken but when i run fingers through my scalp in that area i can feel the broken hair.I have done rebonding for the first time and dint find much articles about this problem.can you please guide me about this..

Thanks
Dimple

Hi Dimple,

Oh dear, it is due to the fact that when you did the rebonding, the stylist pulled too hard in that few places and damaged it at the roots (I just asked my good friend who is a hair stylist about this question, not at Arowana, she has over 20 years of experience).

Nothing much can be done now. Just be very careful and gentle when you wash your hair and tell your stylist (better still change stylist to a better, more gentle one) to treat your hair with care as it is already brittle due to over pulling. Treat your hair to strengthen it and be real gentle with it!

Hi Jhenjeff Manansala,

If you want it to be straighter or maintain it at this straightness, I suggest you wait one more day before washing it!

You won't regret it!

Hi Nahid Hasan,

If the greasy condition is too uncomfortable, then wash it off once it is three full days which should be about now!

i got my hair rebonded last Sept.22..but now may end are frizzy and dry, what should i do?

Unknown said...

Hi, did you use any hair care treatment after the rebonding? If you can, go for monthly hair treatment At the salon. If cost is a factor then a daily maintenance would be leave on conditioner or rinse out conditioner. My fav when I had rebonded hair was clairol herbal essence conditioner in pink bottle for straight hair. The blue/purple colour bottle by clairol for hydration is good to keep the hair bouncy and healthy too.

Hi! I got my hair rebonded yesterday, and I don't like it to be so straight...if I will wash my hair tomorrow which would be the 2nd day...will it be back to normal or it will be worse?

Unknown said...

Hi, after rebonding no matter what you do your hair won't revert to your pre-rebonding state because the process of rebonding means they apply stuff to break down your hair cuticles so as to 'rebond' it and basically that part of your hair is 'dead', I know our hair is already made up of dead skin cells but from the alive hair it is now dead hair that is on life support (regular treatments help keep it lovely). How fast you wash to determines how straight it will be. Do take care of your rebonded hair and don't make any drastic changes to it like curl, etc in the next six months.

Hi.. I loved your blog! I got my hair rebonded on Thursday (today is saturday) and j absolutely love them.. but I cant sleep comfortably because im supposed to make sure my hair remain straight.. so I just cant wait to wash them already! So my question to you is should I wash it tomorrow (Sunday) or should I wait longer? If Sunday then a morning shower should be okay or should I wait till night time. Also my hairdresser gave me the loreal professional liss ultime shampoo and masque. Should I just use those directly or should I apply a natural hair mask or oil my hair before taking a shower? Please tell me EXACTLY what I should do for my first hair wash cause I just LOVE my new hair and I want every thing to be perfect. Also what should my normal hair care routine be after this first time? Please reply soon.. waiting very excitedly :)

Sunday afternoon should be ok. Since your salon gave you the products, use them! Invest in a serum to apply daily/after each hair wash. Happy you love your hair!

I did soft rebonding on my hair 3 days ago. Should i apply serums already and blowdry it straight? My salon told me to do so but i'm not sure if it's a good idea. Thanks!

I just did soft rebonding on my long hair 3 days ago. I just washed it today. My salon recommended me to apply a leave in serum and blow dry it after my first wash. Is this a good idea? Thanks!

Unknown said...

Hi Hazwani, yes apply the serum after each hair wash to protect the ends! Blow drying is optional but I always blow dry my hair. Up to you!

Can I wash my hair one and a half day after rebonding?

Unknown said...

Better not. Three days for better effects.

Unknown said...

Hello! I just want to ask, can I have a hot oil treatment at salon 4 days after i rebonded my hair?? I really want to hot oil my hair because it's really dry and looks damage :(

Unknown said...

Yes. Any treatment is good. Wait 3 days at least before doing anything to your newly rebonded hair.

Hi I'm debby. I just did rebonding. Is it necessary to blow dry my hair after everytime I wash my hair?

Hi! I just had my hair rebonded last saturday. Im planning to curl even just the ends of my hair for my graduation this friday. Would it be okay or it will just damage my hair? I really want to have curled ends this friday.

Unknown said...

Since it will be seven days after the rebonding, temporary curls should be ok. Just make sure to wash it properly and apply the serum on it especially at the ends regularly

chibi said...

I will be using hair straightener for the curls, would it be okay?

Unknown said...

Hi Chibi,
Any Perming/curling/straightening will do damage to the hair so whatever you do, make sure to rescue and repair your hair after that! Serum/home treatment works well too! Happy graduation!

Hey Sue,

I got my hair rebonded last year in April. Now I was thinking of dying it but I'm afraid it will damage my hair and will go back to its curly/wavy look. If I dye it, will it go back to its wavy look? Or will it just damage my hair? I really need to know! Please respond, ASAP! :) Thanks.

Unknown said...

Hi Princyy, the rebonding parts usually won't be curly because in order to straighten it a chemical was applied to relax the hair, that is to break it down to be reshaped, in other words the hair is 'dead'. So the rebonded parts won't be wavy again after you dye. Maybe you would like to consider a touch up rebonding together with the hair dyeing in one session so the chemicals are washed off in one session with chemical treatment on the spot. Just remember to take care of your hair on a regular basis!

Hai miss sue i just got rebonded my hair last saturday may 17 2014 and i was very depresed on the outcome of the rebond procedure i cant feel my rebonded hair it goes soo bad when i look and comb my hair very near on the mirror i see dat theres a lot of died hair split ends and wavy part of my hair i feel so bad about it why its goes like this?????

Unknown said...

Yes my hair gets slyt straighter after the rebond procedure since my hair before is very dry frizzy britle dull wavy etc but i thought when i undergo a rebond procedure my hair gets shiny and nothing to worry about bad hair but it goes nothing why why why? Help me

Unknown said...

Hi Fern, the only thing you can do now is to apply serum on a daily basis at the ends of your hair. Give it some time, rebonding actually 'damaged' your hair structure so the smoothness needs time to be 'cultivated', hence don't skip the treatment at home and if possible change a hairstylist for treatment if you are not happy with this one. Follow your instincts. :)

Hi there, i want my rebonded hair to have volume since it is now pin straight. Is it ok to blow dry rebonded hair after every wash?

Unknown said...

Is it ok to use vitress cuticle coat miss sue? if not wat brand of hair serum u can recomend me and is it ok to wash and apply treatment 2 days after the rebond session? Sory for so many question miss sue i just want to feel better huhu.....

Unknown said...

Hi Princyy dyeing it should not 'rebond' it to wavy. Just make sure to protect it with treatment after dyeing it!

Unknown said...

Hi Lia Aiken, yup blow drying is fine, it does give the hair more volume. Just remember to apply serum at the ends of your hair before each blow dry!

Unknown said...

If you feel that your hair looks really bad then I suggest you go for hair salon treatment to make your hair softer and looks better, after that any hair treatment at home is better than nothing. :) start hunting for a good salon now for your monthly hair salon treatment. Don't worry, after all, it takes effort to look good, same goes to our hair. Good luck!

Hello, I just got my hair rebonded this Monday afternoon. The stylist said to wash it with conditioner on Thursday morning.
When is he right time to tuck my hair behind my ears, use hair accessories and ponytail my hair?
I also dont know how to position my hair while sleeping. Can I comb it upwards so that my hair lays above my head while sleeping? Or you have other suggestion.
Note: it's mh first time3

Unknown said...

Hi Mary Maurene, best not to tuck it behind your ears before the first wash. No need to comb it either, just let it splay all over by raising it with yr hands and spreading your hair around you while you lie down to sleep. On the 4th day, wash out the chemicals and use conditioner and remember to finish with serums for the ends. Protect your hair with regular treatment and apply serum at home after every hair wash. Best not to tie it up when it is still so 'new', to maintain the straight look.
